My Three Weeks at MJH Accountants, by Ryan McKenzie

My name is Ryan and I am 20 years old.

My home town is Preston, but I am currently studying for an accountancy degree at Stirling University. As I know it is essential for me to gain as much experience as possible to enhance my employability opportunities after my degree, I thought I would try and gain some practical work experience during the summer holidays.

I applied to several accountancy firms in both Preston and Stirling, MJH Accountants being only one of a few who actually replied to me. MJH Accountants offered me the opportunity to undertake some valuable work experience, which I was naturally delighted about.

My three weeks at MJH Accountants absolutely flew by and I thoroughly enjoyed the variety of work I was given to do. It was great to be able to do some practical accountancy work as my degree programme is all theory based. The first day was very challenging as I had to work on Xero software, which was completely new to me. I also had to put into practice some of the skills I had learnt in my two years at university.

It’s been great working in an office environment and working as part of a team. The staff were extremely friendly and made sure I was always on the right track. They always helped each other out too.

My experience at MJH Accountants has confirmed that accountancy is the right career for me. On completion of my degree I hope to secure a role within an accountancy firm where I can undertake further training to acquire chartered accountancy status.
