MJH chose MND Preston as the charity to support for 2023/24

When choosing a charity to support, the options and suggestions are often endless. Most of us hold a particular charity (or charities) close to our hearts and these sentiments usually emanate from our own real-life experiences or those of our families.

MJH are no different; having chosen MND Preston as the charity to support for 2023/24.

Our very own Ellie Felton’s aunt got diagnosed with Motor neurone disease in April 2022, and it is not surprising that after meeting with Professor Suresh Chhetri at Royal Preston Hospital, we wanted to offer our help in raising much needed funds and awareness for a disease that currently has very little support.

Motor neurone disease affects the nerves known as motor neurones. These nerves tell your muscles what to do and are found in the brain and spinal cord. If you suffer from Motor neurone disease, your movement will be affected and you are likely to suffer from a wide range of symptoms, including, inter alia, muscle weakness, speech and communication problems, difficulties in swallowing food and liquids, breathing problems and eventually death.

Motor neurone disease affects up to 5,000 adults in the UK at any one time. There is a 1 in 300 risk of contracting the disease across one’s lifetime and starkly, it can affect adults of any age, but is more likely in the over-50s age group.

As motor neurone disease is not common, general health and social care professionals may not see many cases. This means it is important to seek out specialists who have appropriate experience in its treatment and care – usually involving a referral to neurological services.

Now most of you know we at MJH like to challenge ourselves in helping those dreams come true. So why not support the staff of MJH when we tell you in February 2024 we will be going to Jail in our very first ‘Jail or Bail’ event. You get to pick fictitious trials for the members of staff to do in exchange for donations. Once we hit our target, those jail birds are set free!

However, why stop there!? In June 2024, we will be jumping out of a plane at 15,000 feet where we will be doing an accelerated freefall and tandem skydive.

Our final showstopper will be our spectacular Summer ball in September 2024.
